Welcome to DramaTykes!

"Making a Production Out of Play!

We specialize in  theatre and communication education of young children. We are a local business based in Des Moines, Iowa.  We believe that skills learned through dramatic play and performance will provide life lessons—learning to communicate effectively, working well with others, confidence in self, and opportunities to think creatively and be creative!  Drama also gives children a chance to move their bodies and improve coordination.  We currently work with ages 2-5th grade.

Nothing is more fun than helping children be creative and dramatic!  Teachers, CeCe Talley, Sara Nichols, and DeAnna Axness, are all licensed teachers.  We all have degrees in drama, speech, and English.

We travel to daycares throughout the Des Moines and surrounding areas to provide once weekly  instruction for ages 2 1/2-preschool.  We also hold classes at school  for children K - 3rd grade .   We have also held classes at libraries, churches, schools, dance studios and even the zoo.

During a typical class children will do some or all of the following:

Circle with social speaking skills

 Songs, fingerplays, dance

 Basic theater skills

 Movement (creative/character)

Read/Dramatize story

Create or use costumes, puppets,  and masks

Prepare for a performance for peers and family

Mrs Talley and summer camp

Posted July 13, 2012

We just finished our week of summer camp and it went really well!  We had kids in four classes: Circus Fun, Performance Basics, Drama Games and Activities, and Opening Act.  It was our first time with Drama Games and Activities and I, as a teacher, LOVED it! We were able to introduce dramatic concepts, learn tongue twisters to warm up our voices, stretch and move, and use our imaginations WITHOUT the pressure of a big performance on Friday.  Don't get me wrong: I really enjoy performances and see great growth in kids through them, but it was just so nice to learn and experience being DRAMATIC without that on our heads.

The big day

Posted March 20, 2012

Nothing feels as wonderful as the day we are ready to perform in front of an audience!  Watching the children be so proud of what they are doing is priceless.  We try to spend part of our time working toward a performance for family, friends, and peers, but we also spend a good deal of time just 'being dramatic'.    We believe that both have great value to the children we work with.   Sometimes though it's nice to put thoughts of a performance aside and just focus on drama concepts (and of course have fun).  Some fun things we've seen recently during this part of the class:  trying to be a sea urchin walking across a tight rope, sitting still with a grumpy face while our classmates try to make us laugh, figuring out exactly how a caterpillar moves and then moving our bodies the same way, creating new versions of The Three Little Pigs-such as the Three Little Robots, or The Three Little Princess.  The more time we spend talking and sharing and really concentrating on the creative part of our brains, the more we are amazed at what these young children can think of.  When the children are with us we are not just having free dramatic play time, but instead working carefully exploring all the ways to be dramatic and creative.  Here's an interesting article about what we do:

We are growing!

Fall of 2011 is upon us and we've been busier than usual.  We've expanded and added two more teachers.  Sara Nichols and Annette Dove have joined us.  They will be starting classes at new daycares soon.   We also did a program for the first time at a library.  We helped to celebrate the new opening of the Franklin Avenue Library with a  Saturday session and we met 22 new 'tykes' there!  Also, DramaTykes has recently joined with After School Arts Program (A.S.A.P.) to provide a session of after school programming for 3rd-5th graders starting in January 2012.  Our session at Devine Dancers starts at the end of next week as well.   So enjoy the rest of your fall, and we hope to see many new and many familiar faces soon!

Summer Smiles

Posted July 4, 2011

Session at Devine Dancers has ended and now we are on to the rest of the summer.  But first, let's remember all the cute and talented tykes who participated.  We saw our youngest kids become all of the bugs and insects of the summertime.  I (Mrs. A) was lucky enough to have my daughter be a part of Mrs. Talley's class.  It was so much fun to see first hand what dramatykes can do!  My daughter would come home and re-enact all of the things she had done at class.  She was chasing butterflies in the back yard and trying to find the cocoons they came out of.  She was using our laundry baskets as her own 'coccoon'.  It was also so much fun to peek into the classroom and see all the little shy ones telling their names and learning songs.  Parents were lucky enough to see renditions of the Hungry Caterpillar and also a royal dance.  It's always fun to work with some 'older kids' as well, since most of what we do is with the pre-school set.  These kids can learn their lines and make wonderful suggestions for costumes and props to the play they are working on.  So now it's on to the rest of our vacation times, parks, pools, a more relaxing pace.  Keep your eyes posted to our website or Facebook page for any upcoming events.  We are looking to expand to some more daycare centers as well for this Fall if you know of any interest.

Taking a breath

After some amazing performances from our students at the end of year we are taking a moment to reflect on the great things that happened this school year and gearing up for our summer programs.  Our week long session at Devine Dancers is filling up quickly.  Classes offered for ages 2 1/2 - 2nd grade and will be in air conditioned comfort-which will be much appreciated at the end of June!  Mercy Child Development center and Kingdom Kids Academy will be having an 8 week summer session starting June 13th as well.
